Cam Newton quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, was the number one draft pick of the NFL in 2011. He is the third player in history to win the National Championship, The Heisman Trophy, and be the Number One draft pick in the NFL all in the same year. This accomplishment has not been achieved since 1950. Let me give you some food for thought, make you wanna say hmm…. I don’t hear anyone tooting Cam Newton’s horn.
Is it the color of Cam’s skin, or is it that he exceeded the hater’s expectations? I believe it’s both, if he was of the other race, having the same individual stats as a rookie quarterback that he is having….. they would be tooting his horn as if he was the second coming and I wouldn’t be writing this article. Or maybe it’s the 1 and 3 record. Before and after the draft when you turned on any sports channel, all you would hear is talk about whether or not how well Cam Newton would perform in the NFL as a starting rookie quarterback. Well, I say being drafted by a team with a rookie Head Coach, not having the luxury of participated in a full training camp, and being on a mediocre team with a mediocre defense, he’s doing damn good.
Cam has surpassed all expectations, but you don’t hear much about that. He can’t win games alone. I’m not saying he is there yet, Cam still has a long way to go, but as far as his individual stats for a rookie quarterback in his first 4 NFL games….. he has a passing grade that’s worthy to be praised. He’s third in NFL in passing yards with a 334.8 avg per game. He also has a 59.5% over half completion rate. Let me give you more facts for those of you who don’t know. Cam is the fastest player to throw for a thousand yards. He is the first rookie in history of the NFL to pass for more than 400 yards in back to back games, need I say more. So, Cam if no one else is tooting your horn, I am.
